Barn Owl

The Barn owl was made from yew an sycamore, with inlaid black walnut.

The commission was inspired by the sighting of a sleeping barn owl with its chin tucked into its breast feathers.

Achieving the face markings was a complex process, involving laminating sections of pale sycamore with thin strips of black walnut.  The resulting assembly was then turned to a cylinder on the lathe before being glued into the head and body assembly.

The whole form was then shaped by hand, and finished to a soft feathery feel.
