One for sorrow, two for joy – commissioned as a wedding anniversary gift, they had to come as a pair.
A complex assembly of blocks of wood was required to achieve the markings of a magpie. The very dark wood is Wenge, reclaimed from parquet flooring from the National Theatre in London, set against the very pale sycamore, made for a stunning contrast.
Each bird sits on a perch of oak, that has two arcs cut from it that match the belly of the magpies. This means the birds can be positioned in a variety of ways on perches.
